Living It Up the French Riviera
Oh the beautiful French Riviera, a popular destination for celebrities, where you can see the stars during the Cannes film festival celebrates, Try your luck in the casinos of Monte Carlo or a good time in Nice. The region also known as the Cote d'Azur, attracts visitors all year round with its beautiful scenery, amazing designer boutiques and charming towns and villages.
A longtime favorite with the British, the French Riviera full of Mediterranean charm of its beaches of fine sand in beautiful villas. You can not fail to be seduced by its cities as you cruise along the coast. Some of what I believe are the highlights see when you step ashore.
Cannes
Cannes was a humble fishing village before Lord Brougham, the former Lord Chancellor of England, was arrested there on the way to Nice in 1834 and so loved that he had a villa built outside village. He also convinced his friends to live as other houses were built and Cannes began to prosper. Court of Queen Victoria also visited the place and it quickly became famous as a resort for the rich and famous.
Of course, when you mention the word Cannes it makes you think of the famous festival of film and jet-set. But if you're like me and prefer a little culture of people watching or spend a fortune in designer boutiques, there is much to see and do. Work some of that food with a climb to the top of the city, Upper Town, for spectacular views of the coast and then Wend your way back to sea level through the narrow streets. For something less painful to walk along the Croisette, which follows the curve of the bay and takes you from gardens full of flowers and trees.
Step back in time Castre Museum (located in the old city) where you find artifacts Mediterranean Egypt, Greece, Rome, Mesopotamia, Iran, Syria and Cyprus. Art primitive Oceania, Africa, Asia and the Americas is another area of interest. If a walk museum does not bother you, climb the medieval tower for a panoramic view on Cannes and the bay.
If the man in the iron mask, subject to various films and books, captures your imagination and you have enough time, the Maritime Museum on Ile Sainte-Marguerite Port-Royal (about 1km from Cannes) is the place where you can visit his cell. The museum is also full of maritime treasures, including the remains of cargo ships going back to Roman times.
Monte Carlo
Did you know that Monte Carlo Casino The first began when Prince Charles III decided that, to prosper, after Monaco had sold half its territory to France for the independence and money, tourism and gambling were the key? Since then, Monte Carlo has grown to become a haven for players, and home to one of the most exciting Grand Prix races in the world. The city has 300 days of sunshine a year, then after visiting you may be tempted to go there to avoid the traditional British "summer"!
If lady luck will grace you its presence in the casino and you can not face your other half, you can hide underground in the Cave of the Observatory, located 200 feet below the Jardin Exotique (south of the casino). To know what lies below, visit the Oceanographic Museum and Aquarium (located on the coast of St Martin Avenue) with its amazing collection of sea creatures in the museum itself and the spectacular display of the Marine Fauna and Flora in the aquarium. If 're lucky, you can see Nemo and his friends swimming around Golden.
You may find yourself waxing lyrical about the wax museum shows episodes Historical Grimaldi (the leaders of Monaco) past and present life (on Lower Street in the old city), or drooling over the Prince of Monaco's car collection (20 minute walk from the Place du Casino), which has about 100 vehicles.
Do not be at your feet every day that you want explore? Easy! Just take the "Train" from outside the Oceanographic Museum Monaco passing Port, Monte Carlo and its Palaces, the casino and its gardens, before returning to the old town with its Town Hall and finally the magnificent Prince's Palace.
Nice
A little story for you. Legend has it that in 1543, a vanguard of invading Turkish army approached Nice. To frighten them, a large common laundry (Also the reputation of being ugly), climbed a ladder and mooned the Turkish guards. The Turks withdrew, and the new heroine Nice was adopted as the patron saint of the city. Hopefully there is no danger now!
Get a panoramic view of the city by walking up Castle Hill (Castle Hill), located between the old town and port, and build your appetite for dinner at the same time.
The admirers of art, both past and modern, have a choice of museums to visit. If you're like me and think that most modern art is just plain weird and that children can learn better, head out of the Matisse Museum (just north of downtown) that the drawings of houses and paintings Henri Matisse, whose famous Still Live with pomegranates and flowers and fruit. Alternatively, the Chagall Museum has the largest collection in the world of paintings drawings and sculptures by Marc Chagall (Russian painter born in French). lovers of modern art is the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Modern and Contemporary Art Museum), near Nice Acropolis Congress Centre. The museum displays works of art by Andy Warhol, Jean Tinguely and Niki de Saint Phalle. Works of the School of Nice are also discussed.
Of course, you can not talk without speaking of Nice on the Promenade shops. The British arrived in the 18th century and began building houses and churches. However, during the winter of 1821-22 an unusually gel strong arrested over the construction and there was much unemployment. The Church of England has raised funds and put a lot of unemployed to work to build a bridge to the sea along lies along the promenade on the Mediterranean coast for about 3 miles. Ideal for outdoor work lunch.
Villefranche-sur-Mer
As its name suggests, Villefranche is located literally on the sea a deep water port, city dates back to 1295 and is steeped in history. The Navy and Zoological Laboratory (near the port), for example, used to be a prison for the convicts. More recently, the Promenade and navy, which stretches along the waterfront, was the basis for the fleet of U.S. sixth until 1967
La Chapelle St-Pierre, located on the dock Courbet, is a sight to behold. Dating from the 14th century it became a reserve for fishing nets and equipment. Fortunately for the building, it was restored by Jean Cocteau, helped by local people, in the chapel 1950s.The Well worth a visit for its stunning frescoes of Cocteau and makes it stand out from the traditional decoration in other chapels.
Designed to protect the bay, the citadel is home to two art museums and the town hall. The Museum houses sculptures Volti Volti, as you can see works Picasso and Miro Museum Boumeester Goetz.
Cannes is famous for its film festival, but several films were shot in Villefranche-sur-Mer including Hitchcock Catch A Thief, The Jewel of the Nile with Michael Douglas, and the James Bond film Never Say Never.
I could go on indefinitely, but I hope I have given you a taste. Cruise lines visiting the Riviera including P & O Princess, Royal Caribbean, Cunard, Carnival, MSC, Fred. Olsen, Celebrity, Ocean Village so that you'll be spoiled for choice. So go ahead, explore the Cote d'Azur. You never know who can meet (I hope Johnny Depp).
